Dried Mealworms
Dried Mealworms are readily taken by a wide variety of birds, particularly insect eating birds, and are a firm favourite of Robins!
Mealworms are the larval stage of the mealworm beetle (Tenebrio Molitor) which is a species of the Darkling Beetle. They are a high protein food source; protein is essential for helping birds through their moult in late summer which can last up to five weeks.
Live mealworms can be very expensive so dried mealworms are a cheaper and much cleaner alternative to provide without losing any of the nutritional content.
Dried mealworms can be rehydrated prior to feeding by soaking in warm water to provide the birds with additional moisture; this is particularly helpful during spring as the added moisture makes the mealworms easier for young birds to swallow. When natural insect supplies are low, particularly in winter, birds will turn to gardens for an alternative food source.
