Niger Seed
Niger seeds are from the Ramtil plant native to Ethiopia and is a relative to the sunflower plant. Often spelt nyger or nyjer, and miss-sold as thistle, it is a tiny oil rich seed that is high in energy, protein and is easy to digest.
A particular favourite of Finches and Siskins, Niger contains high levels of amino acids which are particularly beneficial for young fledglings.
If fed from the ground or a bird table Redpolls may be attracted to the garden. When feeding from a hanging feeder Niger can either be mixed with other straight seeds or fed from a specialist Niger feeder which have very small ports to prevent wastage.
When providing niger seed you are likely to see an increase in goldfinches visiting your garden!
